This written assignment is intended to provide an authentic teamwork experience. Working in a group of no fewer than three (3) and no more than four (4) people, your team will:
1) explore a topic of interest
2) engage with the Organisational Behaviour literature
3) demonstrate analytical, and critical thought with reference to the subject material
4) apply the subject material in a real-world setting
Step 1: Pick a key organisational behaviour concept, theory, or framework for your analysis.
You can select any management concept, theory, or framework covered in either topic 1, topic 2, topic 3, topic 4, or topic 5. Below is a list of concepts, theories, and frameworks featured in these topics for your consideration:
• Organisations as open systems (p 8-9)
• Job satisfaction (p 60)
• Hofstede’s five dimensions of national culture (pp 19-20)
• Individual attributes (pp 43-44)
• The five key dimensions of personality (p 52)
• Perception (p 67)
• Content theories of motivation
• Process theories of motivation
• Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory (p 88)
• Expectancy theory (p 101)
• Goal setting (pp 179-182)
• Stressors (pp 545-546)
*The textbook pages provide a brief synopsis of the topic. The assignment should go beyond the information provided in the textbook.
This list is not exhaustive, and you do not have to limit yourself to this list.
Step 2: Pick an organisation.
This could be, for example, Facebook, the United Nations, or any other organisation in which you have an interest. This organisation will serve as the practical context for the consideration of the advantages/disadvantages of the management concept, theory, or framework selected in step 1 (e.g. expectancy theory).
Step 3: Write your essay.
Your essay should have the following sections:
1. Introduce the concept, theory or framework. Provide a detailed description of the concept and its origins (for example who developed ‘expectancy theory’ when and where, how was it made popular).
2. Analyse the usefulness of the concept, theory or framework for managers of your chosen organisation. You must explicitly discuss and explain advantages AND disadvantages (for example how does expectancy theory help Facebook managers in their day-to-day work and lead to favourable outcomes for Facebook as a whole? What problems could arise when trying
1
to implement ‘expectancy theory’? Could it lead Facebook managers to make wrong decisions, or neglect important issues in their organisation?
3. Connect your main concept, theory, or framework (e.g. expectancy theory) and one other concept, theory, or framework taught in the course (for example job satisfaction). Discuss how the two can relate to each other (for example can applying expectancy theory help reduce the problems created by job dissatisfaction? Would job satisfaction help increase an employee’s willingness to perform and, if so, which attitudes would be the most influential?)
4. Conclude the discussion
5. Provide a reference list
You MUST consult & reference a minimum of six (6) academic articles and two (2) books (of which one can be the recommend textbook Wood et al, 2016) to support your analysis.
You must use either the APA or Harvard Referencing System.
We recommend you consider the following publications to identify relevant articles: The Academy of Management Perspectives, Business Horizons, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Journal.
