Hard copy of Part 1 is due to your second office hour meeting between 11/9 and 11/21.
Part 2- Play Analysis
Introduce the reader to the basic information about the play/musical. Please include the title, the playwright and/or book writer, composer, and lyricist, and publication date.
Provide a brief plot summary of the play. Who are the main characters? What is the main conflict?
Describe the world of the play. What kind of play/musical is it? Is it representational or presentational? Is it realistic or stylized? Which “isms” apply to the play/musical?
Discuss the key themes of the play with evidence from the script.
Research the worldview of the playwright and the social and historical context in which the play/musical was written. How was the original performance received? Cite your sources in MLA format.
Part 3-Performance Critique
View either a live or recorded performance of the play you have chosen and take notes
Include the basic information of the specific production of the play (producing theatre company, director, actor names, production year)
Based on your analysis of the play, formulate a thesis of whether or not the production was successful with evidence as to why or why not
Describe the director’s concept for this production as supported by the design. Which themes are featured and which are not?
Analyze notable actor performances and/or design choices. What worked? What didn’t?
Rephrase your thesis to conclude of whether or not the production overall was a success.
Part 4-Creative Proposal
If you were to be the director, set designer, costume designer, lighting designer, or marketing director for a new production of this play/musical, what would your concept be?
Which themes would you feature over others?
What evidence from the text of the play/musical supports your concept?
Provide visual support for your concept. This can take the form of research images, a rendering, a prospective poster or advertisement.
Describe your reasoning for selecting or creating your visual support.
