Week 3 Assignment – Health Policy and Law Basics

Overview
The role that laws play in the study of healthcare and public health is vital in understanding how your job in healthcare intersects with legal areas. This assignment will explore healthcare policy making, and the sources of law that govern health care organizations. The knowledge obtained will help you understand how policy structures and laws affect patient care. For this assignment, refer to your textbook for examples of specific sources of federal laws, state laws, and administrative regulations.
Instructions
Write a 2–3 page paper in which you:
Evaluate the policy-making process and policy structure within the healthcare system at the state and federal level.
Analyze an example of a state or federal bill related to healthcare, showing it in action, and including one advantage or disadvantage.
Analyze three sources of law related to healthcare and provide an example of one law in action.
In addition to the textbook, provide two sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and valid. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.
This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:
Assess the different types of health care laws, their foundations, their types, and their importance.

For each resource you use in your coursework, there are two things you must do. First, add the resource to the source list on the final page/slide. Second, insert an in-text citation to each sentence which quotes, paraphrases, or summarizes information from that resource. Make sure that each in-text citation has a matching source list entry, and vice versa, before submitting an assignment.

What is an in-text citation in SWS format?
Does SWS have in-text citations? What are the parts of an in-text citation?

Topics Citation: Strayer Writing Standards (SWS)Citation and Plagiarism
Answer
Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) requires you to give credit to any sources you use. You do this in two ways – with a source list at the end of your work, and with in-text citations.

When crediting a source in your writing, you label it with a number, or in-text citation. If it is the first source you’re using, the label will be a (1). If it is the second source you write about, it will be a (2), and so on.

How does this look in an essay? Here are a few examples.

Smith shares that paraphrasing is a difficult writing skill and takes practice to improve (1).
Johnson shares that “students require multiple opportunities to refine paraphrasing skills” (2).
Paraphrasing is a difficult writing skill and takes practice to improve (Brown, 3).
In the third example an author’s name is included in the in-text citation. This is because the author’s name was not mentioned when introducing the source, like in the first two examples. The author’s name should be in one of these two places – the signal phrase to introduce the source, or the in-text citation.
