Write a documented, research essay or PowerPoint based on one of the following prompts.

Recently several issues (for example same-sex marriage, medical marijuana, immigration restrictions, and healthcare laws) have placed the federal government and some states at odds. Select an issue and look at the supporting documentation for both the federal and the state of Texas perspective. Does allowing Texas to take an action that opposed federal law undermine not only the federal government but the law and policies of other states? For this option, you can write an essay or create a PowerPoint. (CT/CM)  Texas is a frequent visitor to the Federal Court system. Many US Supreme Court cases involving Texas have had a dramatic impact throughout the nation. Select one of these cases and discuss the impact that case has had not only on Texas but in terms of setting a precedent that has impacted the relationship between the national government and the states. For this option, you can write an essay or create a PowerPoint. (CT/CM)
ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS Whether you are doing an essay or PowerPoint, you must: 1. use at least three (3) different outside sources of information (properly cited). 2. write at least 750 words of text (not counting your Reference or Works Cited page). 3. adhere to academic-style writing, structure, grammar, and punctuation rules (use of bullets in a PPT is acceptable). 4. utilize appropriate in-text source citations. 5. include a properly formatted Reference or Works Cited page

AUDIENCE Academic—members of your GOVT 2306 class
LENGTH AND FORMAT  At least 750 words (not counting your Reference or Works Cited page). A significant number of points will be deducted from your paper’s grade if it falls short of 750 words.  If you are doing a paper or essay, then you must use appropriate MLA or APA rules and formatting.
Due Dates — A final, hardcopy version of Writing Assignment #1 is due on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. Any late paper or PPT will automatically lose 10 points. No assignment will be accepted after Wednesday, October 4, 2017.
NOTE 1: Do not use Wikipedia or any other “summary” websites as a source for your paper. NOTE 2: No more than 20% of your writing assignment’s text should be directly quoted material. NOTE 3: Plagiarism will result in you receiving an automatic “F” and zero points for this assignment.
