Strategy in Urban Areas

Write a 4-7 page problem-solution paper on one of the following topics:

1. How to apply urban gardening to a particular city of your choice that would benefit greatly from this innovation.
2. An effective strategy for SpaceX and NASA to successfully colonize Mars. Focus on one specific aspect of the colonization process, not the entire arc of the project.
3. How to deal with a specific issue relating to homelessness in your community.
4. Establishing a better public transportation system in Colorado Springs.
5. Creating a strategy for building an extended underground transportation tunnel system somewhere in the United States. You’ll want to study Elon Musk’s Boring Company for guidance.
6. A practical, realistic method for solving one specific problem within Kyiv, Ukraine.
7. Strategies for actualizing a specific long-term career goal you plan to pursue. This means you’ll be personalizing the discussion and using first-person pronouns as necessary, but don’t use second-person pronouns in this class. This shouldn’t be a generic conversation.
8. Implementing a cultural, technological, or educational innovation that will improve the quality of life in your community.

Be sure to do the following:

I. Overview the problem in an introductory movement of one to two paragraphs of 6-8 sentences each. Explain why the issue matters. State your thesis at the end of your introductory movement, which means it would come at the end of the first or second paragraph. The thesis should include a mention of a problem in need of a solution, e.g., “In order for SpaceX and NASA to successfully colonize Mars, they will have to choose a location near a frozen water source and with soil that can be easily drilled for underground tunnels and bases.”
II. Then, write a multiple-paragraph movement that defines the problem in some detail. Overview the concern shown by those with the means to effect change who have been acting on the problem.
III. In your next movement, propose your solution in equally clear detail. Your problem and solution movements should be of equal length.
IV. Analyze elements of the implementation process and its outcomes. This means examining details that most people might not consider, much less notice, to include possible short- or long-term possibilities.
V. Each body paragraph should be from 4-8 sentences, and most body paragraphs should include the following structure:
i. An opening topic sentence that supports your thesis.
ii. At least one sentence just after the topic sentence that supports the topic sentence with logic and evidence.
iii. Include a quote or paraphrase from one of your sources in the third or fourth sentence of at least five body paragraphs.
iv. The paper should include both direct quotes and paraphrases, and cite at least seven different sources, all of which should be credible (don’t use Wikipedia, ask.com, Sparknotes, Cliffnotes, BrainyQuote, etc.).
v. A sculpted closing sentence of your own (not an outside source) that completes the thought of the paragraph.
VI. Finish with a closing paragraph of 4-8 sentences that offers a tonally appropriate call to action.

The essay must conform to the following guidelines:
I. Use the MLA format precisely in citing your sources, to include in-text citations and a works cited page. Note that if you fail to properly credit all sources within your body discussion, then you’ve plagiarized. Note, too, that the works cited page is never part of the required minimum page count for any of these assignments. Thus, this assignment asks for 5-10 pages of written text plus the works cited page.

II. Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, indent your paragraphs, and double-space uniformly. Carefully review this video for guidance on how to format your paper:

Note, too, that if you use citation engines, you still need to cite your sources properly. Here’s the link to a Purdue OWL sample MLA paper page that you’ll find helpful:

III. Cite at least four outside sources, but use the source-per-page rule, which means if you write seven pages, you should have at least seven sources. Likewise, always credit your work properly. Again, credit both paraphrased and directly quoted sources. Use at least one source from our PPSC databases (https://libguides.ppcc.edu/az.php), and make sure all your sources are credible. For instance, don’t use Wikipedia, generic online dictionaries, unsubstantiated claims from blog sites, and so on.

IV. Include visuals (pictures, graphs, charts, etc.) in your paper. Note that visuals won’t count as page count. In other words, you’ll need 6-10 pages of text not including the visuals.
V. Moreover, always avoid dropped quotes. A dropped quote happens when writers don’t link quotes to their own text with a signal phrase.
