Assignment
Mini Lecture:
This module will address Special Housing Units, Special Management Units, and other special inmate populations. Within the Bureau of Prisons, there is a wide variety of inmates that come from all walks of life. Administrators are faced with challenges that are diverse and complicated. Mental health concerns, disruptive behavior, female offenders, and elderly offenders are just some examples. The Bureau uses special programs to manage these issues. Some examples for mental health problems would be the Challenge Program, Reintegration Housing Unit, and Sex Offender Treatment. Another flagship program is the Residential Drug Abuse Treatment Program. For disruptive inmates, the Bureau has the Special Management Units in which security is enhanced. They also have Communication Management Units for inmates that are involved in serious phone abuse or who have used the mail to commit additional crimes. These are just a few examples. We will also address Special Housing Units. These are located at every institution in the Bureau. This is better known as segregation, or a prison inside the prison. This is where inmates who misbehave are sent. It is not always for punishment though; inmates who require protective custody are also housed in the Special Housing Unit. Also covered this week is the Administrative Remedy process. This is the system in which the inmates appeal their punishment, challenge prison conditions, or file grievances regarding unfair treatment.
