Course Description:
This class engages questions of personal and cultural identity in American literature. The readings for this class cannot hope to be representative of the emerging multicultural canon; nonetheless, it covers a variety of different ethnicities represented in American authors and the themes of their literature. The class challenges the issues of identity, representation, culture, politics, and art that such content dictates that we discuss.
James Baldwin’s Sonny’s Blues.
Topic:
Baldwin includes children as characters in both his fiction and nonfiction. What insight does the reader gain about the adult characters through watching their interactions and relationships with children? Are the children necessary for the adult characters’ development? In what ways? Write about Baldwin’s work on a topic of your choosing. Be sure to focus your argument/analysis and support your claims with evidence from the texts.
