1 – Based on DSM-5, please differentiate between Somatic Symptom Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder. Then refer to the DSM-5 Clinical Cases book online (in the DSM Library within the N. library system – the name of the library will be provided) and complete the following to help you further your diagnostic skills in differentiating Somatic Symptom Disorder from Illness Anxiety Disorder:

Review cases 9.2 and 9.3 and please avoid looking at the diagnosis and discussion supporting the diagnosis until after your own conceptualization of the case and diagnosis):
Explain how you did with regard to your own diagnostic work up of the cases.

2 – Also based on your reading of the DSM-5 this week, what is the key difference between the diagnoses of Other Specified Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders and Unspecified Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders?

3 – Based on your reading about these disorders, what do you think might be some of the challenges in counseling clients with Somatic Symptom Disorder? You can also feel free to highlight any of the other disorders in this category for this particular discussion question.
