Research Question

Research Question and Study Design Assignment

Students are expected to write a research question (RQ) and a brief explanation of it (see checklist below). They are also to explain the type of study that would need to be conducted to answer this RQ and the potential strengths and weaknesses of their study design.

This RQ will form the basis of the remaining assignments. Based on feedback provided, the RQ submitted may require adjustment for the literature review.

The assignment must be submitted online through the Blackboard Dropbox by 11:59pm on the due date. Assignments must not exceed 2 pages (double spaced).

Evaluation of the RQ will be based on the following:

  1. Components of the RQ: Is it a sound and solid RQ? (3%)
  2. Completion of RQ checklist: (4%)
  • Why is this RQ of interest?
  • Is there a strong rationale for this RQ?
  • Is this RQ researchable?
  • Is the information required to do this research accessible/available/collectible?
  1. Is the study design chosen appropriate? (2%)
  2. Were important strengths and weaknesses highlighted? (3%)
  3. Sources used to come up with the RQ: at least 7-10 peer-reviewed sources that helped you narrow down your RQ (3%). Use APA style for referencing.

PART 2

Critical Appraisal Assignment (15%)- 3 pages, one for each research paper relevant to Research Question

Students will select three research papers relevant to their RQ for critical appraisal

Using the information discussed in class, students will appraise these three papers and determine whether they are of high quality and whether their results are trustworthy (bias’s). Each appraisal should be one page long (double-spaced), and will be worth 5%.

PART 3

Literature Review (25%)- 6 pages

Based on the approved RQ, students will complete a literature review and provide a rationale for their RQ.

The literature review is meant to be an introduction to the topic, providing pertinent background information for the reader/reviewer.

The literature review should have subheadings which include; rationale, purpose, and hypothesis. It must be 6-8 pages in length (double-spaced).
