This Research Essay assignment is the last essay assignment of the semester. This essay assignment is important for two reasons: 1.) It provides you an opportunity to explore a career you are interested in pursuing. 2.) It offers you a critical thinking opportunity regarding important skills necessary to be successful in your career choice.

For this final assignment, think about all you have learned this semester, especially about yourself and how you think. As you will see, this final essay requires you to think about your plans moving forward, specifically your career goals.

The directions for writing the research essay:

Overview:
The PURPOSEof this essay is to inform readers about the career you are considering and convince them that you have characteristics that will help you be successful in this field.
This essay requires you to use headings and must include each of the following headings:
Introduction (do not create a heading for the introduction)
History: (how did this come to be a career?)
Educational Requirements: (look at costs, too…)
Job Opportunities:(look at demand, look at your particular focus in the field, i.e. if you have chosen nursing—you may want to specialize in pediatrics)
Demographics/Salary Potential:(where do you need to go to find employment in this field? What kind of money can you expect to earn?
Characteristics I Will Use to be Successful: (identify three characteristics you possess that will ensure your success in this field)
Conclusion: (your summary of the essay you have written)
Additional Criteria:
This essay has a 3-page minimum and a 5-page maximum plus a Works Cited page.
This essay must be typed, using MLA formatting guidelines.
The bulk of this essay SHOULD be written in third person. Try to limit your use of first person to the introduction, your explanation of characteristics you possess that will help you succeed in this field, and conclusion. Absolutely avoid the use of the pronoun, “YOU.”
This essay requires a minimum of three (3) resources, and these resources must be listed on a Work Cited page. Also a minimum of three (3) quotations (one from each source) must be used in the body of the essay, and these quotations must be cited using MLA guidelines.
Please carefully copy edit for surface-level errors (errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar). There is no need to lose valuable points because of these types of mistakes.
