Post-Colonial ; Nigeria

Do research on the economic, political and social institutions in Nigeria during the POST-COLONIAL period. This means the historical time frame after your country gains its independence. If you have an African nation which was never colonized (Ethiopia or Liberia), you should look for sustainable development from the 1970s-the present time. Look for ways the people (especially women) in your African nation used agriculture, the natural resources, etc.; what specific kinds of educational and political practices they instituted and what cultural and belief systems they engaged in. Do not use Wikipedia or Ask.com (any of the commercial websites). If you use website, they must be credible and scholarly (.edu or .gov sites are usually good). Any website that doesn’t have identifiable author information, publication information, etc. might not be good to use. Try to find a variety of sources: books, journal articles, etc. It is not good to write a paper using only one type of source. DO NOT SUBMIT A PAPER THAT IS SUPPORTED BY ONLY INTERNET SOURCES. You MUST use a book and an academic/scholarly journal in this final paper.

Develop a three (3) page argumentative paper in which you identify one practice that the people (especially women) in your African nation engaged in that could be viewed as sustainable development and make an argument about it. It can be an economic, political or social practice. For example, maybe they use a specific type of crop cultivation system they use to ensure the land is not overused. Keep in mind you must stay within the ancient or medieval periods (proper historical context). In your paper explain why you have chosen this practice and why you see it as a sustainable practice. Support your analyzes by using direct quotes, paraphrases or statistics from your sources. And remember when you use information from sources, you must cite those sources using correctly formatted footnotes in the body of your paper. Your thesis statement should make an argument about the identified practice. (For example: This essay argues that the practice of indirect rule helped maintain peace in Nigeria, allowing for sustainable oil development). Please put type your thesis SENTENCE in bold face font. The thesis is one sentence in this class. All papers in this class must have a well-developed THESIS statement. That is one sentence which explains to the reader what the fundamental argument is in the paper. Please underline or put your thesis in boldface font.

Please use double-spacing and 12-point font. Insert page numbers on your paper. Do not include a title page. Just type your paper. You do not need to include a Works Cited, References, or Bibliography page, just make sure your footnotes in the paper are complete and correct. YES, you must utilize footnotes in this paper.
