Clinical Applications I

All assignments MUST be typed, double-spaced, in APA style, and must be written at graduate level English.

You must integrate the material presented in the text. In addition to the text, you may use current (5 years or less), evidence-based research articles on positive psychology, but these should support and compliment the text, not replace the text. Cite your work according to APA format.

Culture and diversity issues must be addressed when relevant.

The entire assignment should be 6-7 pages total plus a title and reference page.

1. A mediator must handle an argument between two people, one from an individualist culture and one from a collectivist culture. The person from the individualist culture has remained engaged in the argument, while the person from the collectivist culture seems to have withdrawn from their position. What can the mediator explain to each of these people about the cultural misunderstanding taking place when it comes to handling conflict?
2. During an intake with a client, a therapist takes note that the client does not appear to have any indication of mental illness. However, the therapist does note that the client has described having a low degree of life satisfaction, little sense of a purpose in life, and the client feels as though they have not contributed much to their community. Explain which areas of well-being that these descriptions belong to, along with whether the client should be described as flourishing or languishing.
3. Identify the ways in which culture influences the concept of resiliency.
4. Create a description of someone who is experiencing positive emotions and is seeing this manifested in two life tasks that they are engaged in. Along with the description, explain how positive emotions help enhance the tasks.
5. Explain how emotion-focused coping can be utilized by individuals belonging to racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States.
6. Discuss the differences between learned optimism and dispositional optimism. Provide an example of how a therapist might encounter these differences when working with a marginalized population.
