“Ballad of the Landlord” (Langston Hughes) “Exchanging Hats” (Elizabeth Bishop)
“The 23rd Psalm” (Anonymous)
“This is Just to Say” (William Carlos Williams)

Instructions:

• Write an essay in which you analyze the main themes in each of the assigned poems. The theme does not have to be the same for each poem.
• You should present your analysis in essay form that is appropriate to college-level writing (paragraphs, transitions, an introduction and conclusion, etc.). For help with this, visit the Handouts and Help section of the Blackboard class site.
• You must explain your ideas in detail in order to make a clear and complete argument. For this assignment, you’ll MUST to include specific examples (quotes) from the reading to support your analysis.
• For this assignment, you must include at least 2 specific quotes from each of the assigned poems.

Point of View: Do not use first person (I, we) or second person (you) in papers for this class. This type of paper (literary analysis) about the readings and should be written in third person only. College-level papers should always be written in third person unless the assignment/professor specifies otherwise.

Length: There is no specific length requirement; however, you need to address ALL the assigned readings and address ALL parts of the assignment in detail. Be sure to provide explanation of and support for your ideas throughout the paper.
