Photography Analysis

Question Description

While a Professor of Sociology in Atlanta, W.E.B. DuBois collected a series of approximately 500 photographs to put on display at the Paris Exposition in 1900. DuBois wanted to combat the Jim Crow stereotypes that pervaded the American South (and nation as a whole) of African Americans. Take a look at a few photographs from the exposition exhibit (preserved by the Library of Congress) before engaging in a group discussion. In 150 – 200 words,

1) choose a photograph and briefly describe it

2) share the message you think DuBois intended to convey about African Americans at the turn-of-the-century. How did he combat the harmless and threatening stereotypes of African Americans used to justify dejure and defacto racism through this photograph?
