Patient Satisfaction and Consumer Feedback

Please post something to the discussion board related to the content covered this week. Each post should be succinct and professional, using all elements of POETS (purpose, organization, evidence, tone, and sentence structure). Do not create your post as a reply to the pinned post. Health care is a service industry. As such, patient satisfaction and consumer feedback are extremely important to quality-of-care initiatives, population health, and process improvement. As a DNP-prepared nurse, you need to be aware of sources of data that report and monitor consumer satisfaction. You also need to be equipped with strategies to use informatics to improve consumer satisfaction with health care services and engagement in their own health and wellness.

With this in mind, talk about the connection between consumerism and informatics.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

What data should health care leaders use to monitor patient satisfaction?
How does the patient satisfaction data represent (or not) diverse populations?
What is the impact of the use of patient portals on consumerism, individual, and population health?
Explain how you would use these data to identify opportunities to use informatics to improve consumer engagement and satisfaction.

A key component to the HITECH Act was to provide opportunities for consumers to gain access to their own health care data. Such access can be afforded via patient portals and digital health. Organizations such as PCORI and the Society for Participatory Medicine advocate for consumers to be actively engaged in their own health. Having access to data such as laboratory and imaging reports provides an opportunity for consumers to ask questions and identity options for addressing their own health care needs. Such data can also help consumers actively participate in lifestyle modification activities designed to prevent or impact chronic conditions such as hypertension or diabetes.

During this week, you will learn more about PCORI and the Society for Participatory Medicine. You will also review studies that have examined the impact of patient portals on well-being, health outcomes, and patient satisfaction. This week’s discussion will give you a chance to discuss the role of informatics and consumerism with your peers. You will also explore databases that measure patient satisfaction and recommendations as to how DNP-prepared nurse leaders to use this information to implement changes.
