Organizational development is vital in an F-18 squadron like VFA 143 because it helps create a strong, efficient, and mission-focused team. It involves improving training, communication, and teamwork to ensure everyone is prepared and performing their best. Leadership has a direct impact on the squadron’s culture and morale. During my time at VFA 143, I saw how bad leadership pushed some Sailors to separate from the Navy due to a lack of mentorship and support. However, even in a challenging command environment, having good leaders in the AO shop who mentored us on personal and professional goals and provided strong in-rate training made a big difference. These positive leaders inspired some Sailors to reenlist or extend their time at the command, showing how strong, focused leadership can create a better culture and encourage Sailors to stay Navy.
