Assessment Task
This assessment requires you to reflect on the impact of workplace culture on your professional practice as you commence your career as a registered nurse. In relation to the scenario outlined below, you are required to explore the possibilities for you to promote an authentic expression of cultural safety for both clients and staff.
Scenario
After graduating as a Registered Nurse (RN) you have gained employment in a general ward in a small provincial hospital, where you have been working for the past six weeks. You arrive to begin a morning shift and as you make your way toward the nurses’ station you become aware that the nursing teams (both night and morning staff) gathering for handover are arguing loudly about their right to refuse to nurse a patient who has just been admitted to the ward. You enter the nursing station and immediately a senior RN explains to you that staff do not want to care for this young man as he is currently serving a term of home detention for sexual abuse offences. He has a diagnosis of haemophilia, and has been admitted to the ward for a Factor Eight transfusion. None of the registered nurses on the morning shift are prepared to provide nursing care for this patient, and several of them make it clear to you that you are expected to adopt the same stance. While you are putting your belongings away you become aware that the patient is directly across from the nursing station and has in all likelihood heard the entire event. What are you going to do? Basing your responses on this scenario, address the assessment tasks listed below.
a) Define cultural safety and discuss the application to contemporary nursing practice
b) Describe and critically analyse at least 3 issues that are affecting the delivery of professional nursing care in this scenario
c) Critical analysis of correct professional nursing responses based on knowledge of identified documents
- Aotearoa/New Zealand legislative requirements
- Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) competencies
- Related codes of practice/professional guidelines
- Relevant research-based evidence
d) Identify three changes you would want to bring about in relation to this workplace culture and describe one change management model and discuss how this model could be utilised to achieve these changes.
e) Critically discuss 3 factors which will demonstrate your practice is culturally competent and person-centered.
