As a class, we will be watching the full-length feature film. You should be watching not just for enjoyment, but on a critical level. You are to apply the multiple communication concepts we have discussed throughout this course to the movie. In other words, what you are doing is putting together theory (course concepts) about how communication plays a role in this movie. Specifically you are to choose one concept from each category on the back page in order to: 1. Briefly explain the concept being discussed (be sure I know you understand the concept you’re discussing—define, explain, give examples, etc) 2. Identify how you knew they existed in the movie (i.e. how did a character’s communication convey the concept being discussed)? Be specific. Use lines from the movie or describe the situation it is used in. 3. Your paper should be a minimum of 3 full pages in length and not exceed 5 pages. Depending on the concepts you choose to discuss, you very well may not be able to adequately discuss all three of them within three pages. Grading Criteria Mechanics: Is the paper typed (double spaced 12 point Times New Roman, w/ 1”margins)? Have you proofread until the spelling, punctuation, and grammar are flawless? Content: Have you briefly (yet coherently) explained each concept (theory) as well as how the concepts were communicated within the movie (application) in a reasonable, well thought out, creative, and insightful discussion with specific examples? In other words, if you choose to discuss nonverbal cues, what was being communicated with those cues?

• Verbal communication (discuss an example of each of the three critical features of language)

• Types of ineffective listening (Pseudolistening, etc)- talk about AT LEAST 3 types

• Nonverbals (discuss three to four different nonverbals in detail) Group 2 (choose one of these three)

• Conflict responses (discuss at least two types- neglect, voice, loyalty, and exit)

• Perception (specifically the areas of organization and interpretation)

• Self-disclosure (discuss at least 3 types, noting if they are open, closed, hidden, or blind) Group 3 (choose one of these five)

• The stages of relationship deterioration (discuss at least 3 stages)

• The evolution of romantic relationships (discuss at least 3 stages of escalation)

• Relationship dialectics (at least 2- autonomy/connection, novelty/predictability, and openness/closedness)

• Styles of loving (at least 3- Eros, Ludus, etc.)
