MONSTERS are with us; we engender them. Kelly Hurley writes that: “[t]he abhuman subject is a not-quite human subject, characterized by its morphic variability, continually in danger of becoming not-itself, becoming other.” This quality of “almost, but not quite” is close to what Freud meant by the uncanny and it invites responses of abjection (distancing, casting out), disgust, shame and revulsion.
In this assignment then, I am asking you to support the position of the monster in terms of having ethical consideration(s) in the twenty—first century.
SEMINAL QUESTIONS TO ADDRESS:
• What IS YOUR THEORY on/of the monster?
• What DO monsters look like today?
• How are monsters to be treated?
• What can monsters do for you and me?
These are some of the questions of the twenty first century, which ultimately lead to your selection of a/the twenty-first century monster! Once “captured” you will proceed to put together your own thesis of how monsters help us to read our own twenty-first century culture. Of course, you CAN use the texts for our course but recall that we are examining monsters of TODAY, and how they provide an ethic toward/for us, the reading culture.
Some examples have come through pop culture in terms of cinema: Jigsaw (SAW series), Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) and even The Joker (The Dark Knight); or, biological homeostasis: pathogens, biological warfare; the political arena: any person(s) deemed terrorist, the media.
Your choice of “monster” will have to be defended by the OED standard(s) we have already come to know (i.e. monster; monstrum); further, it is to be SPECIFICALLY taken from the twenty—first century—so choose wisely.
EXPECTATIONS (failure to comply with ANY of these directives will result in a failed grade):

• 12-15 pages (NOT to be less than the minimum; NOT to be over the maximum; these are FULL content pages).
