Medical Emergencies

This clinical science unit primarily covers conditions in the topics of respiratory, cardiac, neurological and endocrine medical emergencies. Within the key topic areas, the pathophysiology and pharmacological treatments of important conditions are explained in conjunction, where appropriate, with the prehospital treatment and management. The unit is designed to complement, where possible, the clinical practice unit.

OVERVIEW OF WHAT DO YOU ARE REQUIRED TO DO

Choose a topic(s)/condition(s) covered in the lecture material that is of interest to you. You are required to prepare questions and answers that could potentially test the material delivered at the Bachelor degree level in the paramedic degree course you are enrolled in. The rationale is that this assignment will help you to deeply review, revise and learn the content. You will do this by considering the information through the lens of both a student and an assessor.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Part 1: MULTI-CHOICE QUESTIONS

Name condition being tested.
Write five separate multiple choice questions (each with four answer options) that test knowledge of an area in the lecture series that is of interest to you. Ensure all your multi-choice questions relate to the same topic area.
Label the questions 1-5.
For each question you prepare, indicate the correct answer by bolding the correct answer option.

Below each multi-choice question, write a rationale (in the form of a brief explanation) about how this is relevant to you as a paramedic and why it is important you understand this.
e.g. Perhaps the question has been designed to test underpinning knowledge about the pathophysiology about a condition you commonly see, so explain why this is important. Perhaps the question is testing your understanding of medications taken by the patient or that you would deliver in treating the patient. Explain why this is important to know.

Part 2: SHORT ANSWER QUESTION

Name condition being tested.
Create both a short answer question and the actual answer that is testing something of relevance in one of the conditions covered in the lecture series that is of interest to you. This topic area may be different to that tested in Part 1. The question you prepare should be testing deeper or more applied understanding of the material, using a verb like “discuss” or “explain” rather than “list” or “name” will help guide the level of detail you are testing.

Under the question, provide the full answer to the question.

Below your short answer question and its answer, write a rationale (in the form of a brief paragraph) about how this is relevant to you as a paramedic and why it is important you understand this. E.g. Perhaps this question is testing underpinning knowledge about the pathophysiology about a condition you might see or treat, so explain why it’s important you understand this information. Perhaps the question is testing your understanding of medications taken by the patient or that you would deliver in treating the patient. Explain why this is important to know and understand this.
