The purpose of this paper is to promote exploration of the concept of successful aging in an older adult.
Section 1 (60 points) Interview an older adult (age 60 or older) and obtain demographic information that you deem necessary in order to evaluate how the older adult is managing the aging process. Discuss chronological age and how old the person actually feels. Gather information regarding level of education; previous and present functional status; marital status (recently widowed, recently married, etc.); where and with whom they live; financial status; etc. Do a spirituality assessment. Are there any recent changes to their life that may be impacting their ability to cope? It will be important to determine if the individual feels secure in every aspect of his/her life to determine degree of successful aging: explore physical, spiritual, social and psychological factors. Section 2 (90 points) Determine if the older adult is or is not successful aging, and defend your response. Make sure to ask the older adult what his/her perception is about successful aging. Make sure you define the three theories prior to using them. Use an introductory statement with each paragraph. Answers these questions: • What sociological theory substantiates your assessment? • What biological theory may be causing a positive or negative effect? • What psychological theory has influenced the older adult? (See Chapter 3 of your Mauk text and the PowerPoint in week 7).
Section 3 (90 points) Critically think through a goal and a plan of care that will help the older adult continue to successfully age or assist the older adult to be able to become more successful in the aging process. Develop a plan of care, provide three nursing diagnoses with one goal each (goals must be measurable and have a time frame) and two interventions for each diagnosis (your interventions must be supported with EBR rationales) and make sure they correspond to your identified complications you retrieved in your assessment. (One diagnosis needs to be related to spirituality.) Section 4 (10 points) In section 4 of your paper, answer the following questions: • As a nurse what does successful aging mean? • If we were able to help the elderly population age better, how would this change the future of health care?
