Literal Movement

Romanticism – is a movement (in literature and painting) that appeared in the culture of America and Europe in the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century as the antipode to the classical movement. It appeared in German poetry and philosophy, and later moved to Italy, France, England and other countries. It fortunate the latest changes in art.

The new ideology proclaimed attention to individual, freedom of expression, unique features of the human naturalness, looseness and sincerity, which changed the imitation of classicism of the 18th century. The movement rejected the main postulates of the Renaissance ideology, especially its impersonal and artificial position. Instead, emotions and impressions were put on the first place.

Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is a picture that is known as a sign of romanticism. Feeling free from decaying aristocratic system of government there was the need to show the new point of view, open the truth. The position of romanticism changed quickly. It found its supporters in the developing middle class, ready to support emotionally and be grateful to the artist – a genius and a prophet. The strong emotions, often reaching to the extremes, were place on the first place.

Special romantic influence was exposed youth had the possibility to learn and a lot to read. Her inspired idea of individual development and self-improvement, the idealization of personal freedom in the outlook, combined with the rejection of rationalism. Personal development is more important than vanity and standards already fading society of aristocrats. Romanticism proclaimed the idea of necessity of educational process development and youth’s education. The picture “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog” brightly highlighted the main ideas of the Romanticism movement that developed in Europe.

Mysterious stories and fairy tales, enigmatic, even terrible, folk legends were really popular among the writers of this movement. It is important that romanticism is closely connected with different democratic tendencies and national movements in Europe.

Romanticism was found as a literal movement but lately you influenced greatly on such arts as music and painting, but the last one was influenced on a less level. It is interesting that among all kinds of visual art painting and graphics had a greater impact than architecture. The most popular motives of that time were mountains and magnificent ruins.
