An important aspect of supporting students’ literacy development is to involve the students’ families. The first step is sharing knowledge about the process of learning to read and the reading problems children can experience. The next step is explaining the interventional and instructional strategies that can be used in school and at home to help bridge literacy gaps.

Imagine you are a literacy coach who has been asked to develop an informational presentation geared toward parents/families of students in an elementary school.

Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation using Microsoft® PowerPoint® or another medium, such as Prezi® or Powtoon.®

Consult the Technology Resources Library for additional information on presentation media you may use. You may also want to view “How to Make a Presentation” for help creating your presentation. A video transcript is available here.

Include the following components:
Describe the stages of reading development and writing development.
List and describe factors that can lead to literacy success or failure.
Share at least 5 examples of common reading difficulties and their signs/symptoms. Dyslexia should be one of them.
Recommend specific strategies for parents/families to help students with reading development. Consider the 5 domains of reading as you choose these strategies.
Provide at least 3 online resources or applications that can support your recommended strategies. Explain how parents might use those resources at home to support their child’s reading development.

Include detailed speaker notes and title and reference slides.
