Chapter 1 Question: Introduction to Law and Governance. 

Answer the questions a minimum of 200 words and maximum 300 points.

1.Art. VI of the U.S. Constitution is often referred to as the supremacy clause, making federal law applicable and supreme everywhere. All federal and state officials and public employees (including school leaders and educators) must take an oath of allegiance to the Constitution. What are the implications of this oath of allegiance for educators and how does this play out in schools? 

Chapter 2 Question: Children, Families, and the State

Please answer all (7 A-G items) of the questions below. No required minimum/maximum number of words. The primary federal law addressing student records is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law controls the inspection, amendment, and disclosure of educational records. 1.Most schools try in good faith to comply with FERPA, but sometimes schools have disincentives to comply with it. Determine whether the hypothetical cases below constitute FERPA violations, answerable by Yes or No. In addition, provide a justification for your response by citing a specific section of FERPA. Please use the examples below to site FERPA, specifically the ones in bold text.

B. Newspaper reporter Jimi Hendrix discovered records, including grades and standardized test scores, for nearly 500-plus students on Pink Floyd Charter High School Network’s website.

C. Pink Floyd Charter High School Network’s “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program in which mapping technicians were given names and photos of young students and asked to correspond with them.

D. Former coach David Bowie gave a document to Pink Floyd Charter High School Network’s local boosters that included disciplinary details about a named high student athlete.

E. Professor Grace Slick and her doctoral student Janis Joplin wish to conduct a study that will involve recruiting students who are enrolled in UofM’s ACAD 1100 and PHIL 1102 (Intro. to Ethics) and interview them about their opinions about the Peer Empowerment Fellowship Program. As part of their recruitment strategy, they plan to request that the class instructors send out an email on their behalf and then provide additional information to students who initiate contact.

F. School principal Bill Graham and Assistant School Principal Jim Morrison, who both work for the Pink Floyd Charter High School Network, wish to test the effectiveness of the school’s community-based serving learning program using the CASEL Framework. To do this, they will use pre- and post-test Panorama Student Survey, which features topics like student engagement, pedagogical effectiveness, school climate, and safety.

G.Neil Young’s medical school records (a high school student with a long history of delinquent behavior) were released in response to a subpoena without prior notice.
