Involvement of United States in Second World War

It consists of 4 essay questions. All 4 essay questions must be answered to the best of your ability by the end of Module 4. Each answer should be 300-500 words (1.5-2 pages) in length.

1. Why did the United States go to war in 1898, and what were the consequences of the war? Explain.
2. What were the significant American foreign policy issues under Theodore Roosevelt? Explain.
3. Explain the problems faced by the United States due to World War I and the response of President Woodrow Wilson from 1914-1919? (Be sure to consider the foreign policy, humanitarian, and political issues.)

   a. What led to American involvement in World War II? Be sure to include the issues in contention among the United States and Japan and Germany and the domestic restraints on FDR from 1937-1941 in pursuing a more activist foreign policy.
   b. What are the US’s major foreign policy issues of World War II? Be sure to discuss the issues
   You must properly cite all your sources using Chicago/Turabian or APA style, including textbooks and any other sources you may use. It is suggested that you write or print out the essay questions for handy reference as you develop your responses.

Module 4: Module Notes: Korean War and the 1950s

In this module, we examine the questions, “Did the Korean War alter American containment policy?” and “How did containment evolve in the 1950s from a policy aimed at containing Soviet power to a worldwide policy to limit the spread of communism in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America?” We also look at any lost opportunities for a thaw in the Cold War.
As you read the assigned material, you should examine the reasons behind the Korean War and its impact on American foreign policy, especially in Asia. The war froze America’s relations with China for 20 years and began American involvement in Indochina. It also led to a renewed debate about how far to carry the containment policy and the use of covert operations to achieve foreign policy objectives, especially in Iran, Guatemala, and Cuba. You should also consider the thaw in the Cold War after Stalin’s death and the armistice in the Cold War; think about whether there were missed opportunities to ease tensions then and again in the late 1950s as a result of the spirit of Camp David. During the 1950s, the containment policy, originally designed to counter Soviet expansion in Europe, became an effort to limit the spread of communist and radical ideas in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, as President Eisenhower announced in the Eisenhower Doctrine of 1957. It also led to a fear of communism at home and the paranoia of McCarthyism, as Americans internalized the Cold War.
