1. What do you think are the major changes shaping the contemporary world and what do you think their impact is on Management?
2. What happens to one’s sense of individuality in organisations?
3. How is your world flat?

Question 2:

Schwartz (1992) argues individuals generally have the same set of values but priorities them differently. Think carefully about the following:

1. How do individuals priorities in the organization?
2. To what extent is this influenced by personality?
3. How important is it for a manager to understand the values of their team? Does this affect performance?

Senge argues a distinctive feature of successful organisations is their ability to learn.

• To what extent is this accurate in the business environment?
• Why is it important for organisations to learn?
• Why might the term ‘organisational learning’ be a paradox?

Question 2:

Managing change is a key skill required for many managers. Using your own experiences and concepts for this chapter explore:

• Why is change described as a process?
• What is the role of innovation in the change process and why is it pivotal?
• Share your own experiences of change in your own organisations/previous organisations.  What were the issues/problems? What were the opportunities?

Discussion Assignment 4

Question 1:

Over the past century management theory has evolved and its applicability and influence on current management practice has shifted. With this in mind explore the following:

1. What might the ‘founding fathers’ of management theory contribute to us as managers today?
2. Which management models can you identify in your workplace? Are they appropriate? Can you identify potentials for changes and development? Justify your answer with examples.

As well as the Unit 9 and 10 reading, you may find it helpful to refer back to Chapter 5 of the textbook to assist.

Question 2:

Globalisation has had a huge impact on the role of a manager and the skills, knowledge and practice of managers. Using examples for the chapter and business environment consider:

1. What are the key processes for defining globalisation?
2. What are the different kinds of global jobs
3. Is it a paradox to say global is always local?

For this task, you may find it helpful to refer to Chapter 14 of the textbook.
