Importance of Political Involvement

Consider how a nurse may increase his or her political involvement. What are the implications if nurses do not participate in political processes and discussions?

This module will emphasize the importance of political involvement in nursing. Given that so many political debates and discussions, both at the state level and nationally, are focused on the topic of health care and many related, complex issues, it is critical for today’s professional nurse to be informed and knowledgeable about contemporary health care concerns. As a scholar of nursing, you are also seeing issues of health care access, competition for scarce health care dollars, and disease management play out on a global scale. Thus, global issues affecting health care delivery will also be discussed. As a professional nurse, you must demand fact, not fiction, from your legislators. Exercising your right to vote is one important way to become politically involved in the immediate health care issues that affect you and those to whom you provide care.
