The methodology chapter explains how you did your research and – crucially – why every choice was the right one for your question.

The methodology chapter of a dissertation explains how you conducted your research and justifies why you did it that way. It is not simply a description of what you did; it is an argument that your methods were appropriate for your research question and rigorous enough to trust. A strong methodology lets another researcher understand exactly what you did – and, in principle, repeat it – while showing your marker that your findings rest on solid ground.

Restate the research question and approach

Open by reminding the reader of the research question or aims the methodology is designed to answer. Then state your overall approach – qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods – because everything that follows flows from it. Making the link between question and approach explicit from the start signals that your choices were driven by the research, not by convenience.

Choose and justify your research design

Explain the design you adopted – for example, a survey, a set of interviews, an experiment, a case study, or analysis of existing data – and justify why it suits your question. Quantitative designs suit questions about how much, how many, or whether a relationship exists; qualitative designs suit questions about how and why people experience something. Justification is the heart of the chapter: for every choice, say why it was the right one and, where useful, why you rejected the alternatives.

Describe your methods in detail

Set out precisely how you gathered your data: what instruments you used, how you designed them, and the procedure you followed. Give enough detail that a reader could follow your steps – the questions you asked, the variables you measured, the materials you used. Vagueness here undermines the whole dissertation, because a reader cannot trust findings when they cannot see how the data were produced.

Explain sampling and participants

Describe who or what you studied and how you selected them. Explain your sampling method and size, and why they were adequate for your question. If you worked with participants, describe the relevant characteristics and how you recruited them. Be honest about the limits of your sample – a small or narrow sample is not fatal, but pretending it is more representative than it is will cost you credibility.

  • Clear: “I conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve final-year nursing students, selected purposively to capture a range of placement experiences.”

Set out your analysis

Explain how you analyzed the data once collected. For quantitative work, name the statistical tests and why they fit your data and hypotheses. For qualitative work, describe your analytical method – such as thematic analysis – and how you moved from raw data to themes. The reader should understand not just what you found later, but the process by which you turned data into findings.

Address ethics, validity, and limitations

Cover the ethical considerations – informed consent, confidentiality, approval from an ethics board – especially if you worked with people. Discuss how you addressed reliability and validity (or, in qualitative terms, trustworthiness), and acknowledge the limitations of your methods honestly. Recognizing limitations does not weaken the chapter; it shows scholarly maturity and helps the reader interpret your findings appropriately.

Situate your methodology in the literature

Your methodological choices are more convincing when you show they are grounded in established practice. Refer to methodology texts and to similar studies in your field, and use them to justify your approach – “this design follows the method used in comparable research” carries more weight than an unsupported assertion. It also shows the reader that you have surveyed how others tackled questions like yours and made a considered choice.

Where you depart from convention, say so and explain why. A well-justified departure can be a strength, but it needs defending. Anchoring your methodology in the literature – both where you follow it and where you diverge – turns the chapter from a description of what you happened to do into a reasoned argument for why your approach was right.

Write clearly and in the right tense

Describe completed research in the past tense, write in a precise academic style, and follow your institution’s structure and citation requirements. On revision, check that every methodological choice is justified rather than merely stated, that the chapter connects clearly to your research question, and that another researcher could reconstruct your study from your account – reproducibility is the standard the methodology chapter is ultimately judged against.

Justify, do not merely describe

The methodology chapter is assessed on reasoning. Describing what you did is necessary; explaining why that was the right choice, and what you rejected, is what earns the marks. Every significant decision — design, sampling, instrument, analysis — should carry a justification linked to your research question.

A useful pattern for each decision: state the choice, give the reason, name the alternative, and explain why it was less suitable.

Make philosophy proportionate

Many programmes expect a statement of philosophical position — positivist, interpretivist, pragmatist, critical realist. Where required, keep it brief and, crucially, connect it to your actual choices. A chapter that spends three pages on epistemology and then makes design decisions the position does not support has treated it as a hoop rather than a foundation.

If your department does not require it, do not import it. An unnecessary philosophy section frequently introduces inconsistencies a marker will notice.

Be exact about sampling

Sampling is where methodology chapters are thinnest and where examiners probe. State the population, the sampling strategy and its type, the target size and the justification for it, the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and how participants were actually reached.

  • Probability sampling — random, stratified, cluster — supports generalisation.
  • Non-probability — purposive, convenience, snowball — supports depth, not representativeness.
  • Say which you used and accept the limits it imposes on your claims.

Where recruitment fell short of the plan, report what happened rather than the intention. A methodology describing a study you did not conduct is a serious problem at viva.

Describe instruments precisely

For an established instrument, name it, cite its source, and report its validity and reliability evidence. For an instrument you developed, explain how items were generated, how it was piloted, and what the pilot changed. For interviews, include the guide as an appendix and explain how the questions map to your research questions.

Explain the analysis before you present results

State how the data will actually be analysed — the tests and the reason for them, or the coding approach and how themes were derived. Vagueness here is common and costly: “the data were analysed thematically” tells an examiner almost nothing. Name the approach, the steps, and how you handled disagreement or ambiguity.

Address rigour and ethics concretely

Quantitative work discusses validity, reliability and generalisability; qualitative work discusses credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability, and should say what was done to support each — member checking, audit trail, reflexive journal.

Ethics should name the specific risks your study created and the measures that addressed them, along with the approving committee and reference. Generic assurances about confidentiality are the weakest form of this section, and the easiest to strengthen.
