Spanish horses were brought to North America in 1493 during Columbus’ second voyage. They were reintroduced on the continent, in modern-day Mexico. North American horses died out between 13,000 and 11,000 years ago, at the end of the Pleistocene, but they had spread to Asia, Europe, and Africa. Scientific evidence suggests that the horses introduced by the Spanish are genetically the same as the horses that became extinct in North America initially.
As the Spanish brought horses back into Texas, they also brought their influence. In 1690, establishment of Spanish missions and spread among Texas. These were built with the goal of bringing Christianity into the new world, and establishing control over the areas. Soon after the Spanish gained control of the natives, distrust began. In addition, the settlers introduced foreign diseases to the natives, which disrupted their lifestyle.
