Analyze the origins and evolution of the black freedom struggle, from its “birth” in the
“American Dilemma” of World War II (Foner, Ch. 22) through “the changing black
movement” of the mid-sixties (Ch. 25). Your unique overarching thesis, or main point, should
answer a question that looks something like this: How do you explain the origins of the black
freedom struggle and its evolution from WWII through the mid-Sixties? (In other words, how and
why did it come about? What direction did it take, and why?

** The paper needs to be 3 full pages, and It should only have one source which is Give me Liberty!**
This is what my teacher expects:

– Indicate which prompt you have chosen (write: “#1” or “#2”, etc.).
– Include a clear, strong original thesis (your original, unique answer to the prompt; for
example, “The black freedom struggle began with ______________________________ and over time
it fought first for ___________________________ and the later for __________________________, because
__________________________.
– Provide accurate historical information regarding the background, setting and context
(time, dates, locations and relevant overview).
– Provide ample supporting evidence, historical details and examples from the readings,
films, slides, activities and/or other HIST 202 course materials and assignments for weeks
seven – thirteen.
– Write in your own words, except for the occasional use of relevant and purposeful direct
quotations. Be sure to cite your quotations accurately and completely. Note:
o I accept either MLA style citations (in-text parenthetical citations; the style that is
taught in Cañada English classes). It looks like this: “The son of a Presbyterian
minister, Woodrow Wilson brought to the presidency a missionary zeal and a
sense of his own and the nation’s moral righteousness” (Foner, 739).
o Or, you may use Chicago style (the style guide used by historians).
– Do NOT use any additional outside sources without first getting the approval of the
instructor; the primary purpose of this assignment is to apply what we are learning inclass
and in our readings in common!
– You do not need to provide a Works Cited page unless, with Alison’s approval, you have
included information from one or more outside (not from HIST 202) sources, then you
must provide complete, accurate bibliographic citations (MLA or Chicago style) for those
sources. Please ask if you have any questions!
– Be very careful not to plagiarize. I want to know what you think about everything you
have read and learned about. Use your own awesome thinking power to analyze and
interpret what you’ve learned!
– Overall, try to balance information, facts and examples with explanation, analysis and
interpretation. I don’t just want you to regurgitate what you read and learned, but also
process it, analyze it, evaluate it and form your own unique and well-supported opinions.
