Visual Element: At least one visual element embedded in the essay (chart, graph, photo, etc.) To supplement your argument, you must also include at least one visual element in your essay. The visual element can be a chart, graph, photograph or illustration. The visual should be used in such a way as to support the ideas and arguments in your essay and it should be embedded within the body of your essay (not added as an attachment or link). Identify the source of your images next to the image in a textbox or within the body of the corresponding paragraph.
Thesis Statement: Whichever topic you choose, you will eventually need to develop an argumentative thesis statement that clearly identifies your position on the topic. Remember that a thesis for an argumentative essay should be debatable and should clearly take a stand.
Main points: Your claim should be supported by at least three major points.
Counterarguments: Provide at least three counterarguments and their rebuttal or refutation.
Integrating sources: Finally, it is not enough to simply meet the research requirement by throwing in a quote here and there. I want to see that you can integrate the ideas of others neatly into your own argument.
Useful Vocabulary item options
Claim (Thesis) – Your basic belief about a particular topic, issue, event, or idea. Claims are potentially arguable.
Counterclaim (Counterargument) – A solid and reasonable argument that opposes or disagrees with your claim
Rebuttal (Refutation) – A written or verbal response to a counterclaim. The object of the rebuttal is to take into account the ideas presented in the counterclaim and explain why they aren’t persuasive enough, valid enough, or important enough to outweigh your own claim.
Reason-Statements of support for claims, making those claims something more than mere assertions.
Support (Evidence)– Your specific facts or specific evidence used to support why your claim is true.
