Introduction
For this writing assignment, students will pick a global women’s issue and report on this
issue. To complete this assignment, students will need to provide some background information on the issue, discuss key supporters and opponents on different sides of the issue,
discuss how governments, organizations, and individuals are responding to the issue, and conduct a comparative case study of the issue. More detail about each of these requirements is provided below.
Substantive Criteria
Women’s issues include issues dealing with the social, economic, cultural and political challenges facing women around the world. Students can choose any women’s issue they are interested in, but it must be a current issue. Examples of current women’s issues
include: reproductive health and rights, access to education, domestic abuse laws, child marriage, and female genital mutilation. Students must check with me once they have picked an issue to make sure it is an acceptable choice (I want to make sure that the issue you have chosen is specific enough and that you will be able to find the material needed to complete your assignment).
Students should start with a brief summary of the issue they are examining. Basically, you need to tell me exactly what you’re looking at in the first paragraph and explain why this issue is important. The first section should include a brief background on the issue to provide some general knowledge. Where is this issue most prevalent? Has this been an issue for centuries or is it a recent development? Does this issue confront all women, poor women, women from a certain religious or ethnic background? How did this issue arise? (You do not need to explicitly answer each of these questions, but these are the type of questions this section should answer)
Next, you will need to discuss the key actors involved in this issue. You should include discussion over state actors (so the governments of countries), international nongovernmental organizations (like Amnesty International, Red Cross International, OutRight Action International, etc.), international governmental organizations (The United Nations, European Union, etc.), and individuals. Many women’s issues will also involve religious organizations, so include these if they are important for your chosen issue. Discuss actors that support improving women’s rights in this issue area and actors that oppose improving women’s rights in this issue area. You cannot only discuss one side of the issue. You also need to discuss the tactics and strategies that these actors are using to address the issue, the goals of movements dealing with this issue, and the results that these actors have For the final section, students will conduct a brief case study of this women’s issue to
illustrate how the issue is being addressed in a country outside of the United States. So, you should choose a country where your issue is important and discuss how actors within this country are addressing the issue. Discuss how the government has responded to this issue and how the issue fits within the country’s cultural background. As an example, if you are writing about female genital mutilation, you could write about this practice in Nigeria – talk about how this is a long-standing cultural practice that many women are reluctant to stop, how the government has tried to stop the practice by passing laws, and how a women’s movement has formed in Nigeria to try to stop the practice
