Assessment Description

Select ONE of the following social problems:

1. Domestic violence
2. Gender pay (wage) gap
3. Child poverty

Based on the social problem you have selected, do each of the following:

1. Construct a “statement of the problem.” Summarize the magnitude of the problem in the United States, noteworthy policies or programs designed to address the problem, and relevant research findings on “what works” to address the problem. Your response should be 300-500 words. To help you develop this part of the assignment, select and cite 3-4 peer-reviewed scholarly sources (published within the last 3 years). Other scholarly sources or reputable trend data may also be used. 
2. Considering your selected social problem, use Bronfenbrenner’s “Bio-Socio-Ecological Model of Human Development” to explain how influences at each level of the ecological system may have an impact on those affected by the social problem. Identify and describe two relevant social policies that have an impact on individuals or families. Your response should be 300-500 words and should cite a minimum of three peer-reviewed scholarly sources.
3. Considering your selected social problem, use a “strengths perspective” to describe how you might set the stage for bringing about positive change in a micro, mezzo, and macro practice setting. Your response should be 300-500 words and should cite a minimum of three peer-reviewed scholarly sources.
4. Considering your selected social problem, use a “social justice perspective” to explain why it is important for social workers to become actively engaged in policy-advocacy work informed by research evidence. Your response should be 300-500 words and should cite a minimum of three peer-reviewed scholarly sources.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
