Family Therapy Application Paper
Rationale: This assignment asks students to identify a family, provide a detailed assessment of the family, identify the main issues the family is experiencing, and pick a model that may help the family resolve these issues. You will be expected to utilize learning in class related to theory and the varying models presented in class.
Step 1: Step 1: Pick a family (this can be from your internship, movie, book, tv show, etc). Make sure
you know enough information regarding the family to do the outlined pieces. Complete a
detailed assessment of this family. Your assessment must include:
• Roles for each family member (i.e. scapegoat, etc.)
• Communication style within the family
• How roles create and enforce dysfunctional relationships within the family
• Family members with name (changed), ages, place in the family (oldest sister, mother,
• etc.)
• What type of boundaries are seen in the family unit
The assessment section must also include information regarding intersectionality and diversity, and how this manifests within the family unit or roles family members play. You also must include a genogram.
Step 2: Identify the presenting issue that is bringing the family to therapy or causing concern. Pick a family therapy model learned in class and apply it to the (learned) family issues. Describe how the therapist would implement interventions by describing 3 sessions. Be detailed about what the intervention is and how it applies to the family therapy model you have chosen. You must apply at least 2 interventions from the family therapy model. The family therapy model/theory and concepts of the model must be clearly identified, described, and presented. Interventions applied must be relevant to both the chosen model and the chosen family system.
Step 3: Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the model and the ways these would impact family work. Be sure to include diversity, inclusivity, and systems issues that would impact the family.
Notes: The family therapy model/theory and concepts of the model must be clearly identified, described, and presented. Interventions applied must be relevant to both the chosen model and the chosen family system. Limits and strengths should also apply to systemic issues (ex: culture, ethnicity, gender, age).
The paper should be 10- 12 pages not counting reference pages and a title page. An abstract is not needed. The completed paper should include a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed sources. The Nichols text can be used as a resource. You may use relevant non-peer-reviewed sources in this paper; however, they will not count towards the required 10 peer-reviewed sources.
