Generally, there are two purposes for evaluative writing:
1) To determine whether something has succeeded or failed.
2) To improve or refine something
And, of course, Reporting is concerned with presenting the facts.
I also think these two points can be combined–After writing about how something has failed you could devote time to discussing how it could be improved. Even if something is successful there’s often room for refinement, thus, I think (2) really is a natural progression from (1). Keep this in mind as you begin your Evaluative paper.
I CHOOSE TO REPORT AND EVALUATE ONLINE DATING:
Context: I met my boyfriend 6 months ago through an online dating app (Zoosk). I had been on multiple sites, at diff times in my life and it was always a failure. FINALLY, it worked. It’s easier to meet available people on the site, large number of singles than out on the streets in everyday life weeding through people. If you need more testimony from me, please ask!
Incorporate at least TWO outside sources. For example, if you want to evaluate the latest Kendrick Lamar album, I’d want you to read multiple album reviews and incorporate two sources into your paper in order to create a dialogue between yourself and “the outside world”. This is where the Reporting element comes into play.
