Euthanasia – Problem/ Solution Essay

The report should be at least 10 pages, not including the title and reference pages, with an abstract, introduction, body (including literature review), data (using a survey provided by Survey monkey) with tables or appendices, and a conclusion. All in-text citations must be provided with references.

Use at least 3 additional academic sources included in your paper from the LIRN library or other academic sites.

Problem/ Solution Paper
• Describe the problem and give detail about the problem, with research (Lit Review section)

• Convince the reader the problem needs solving

• Explain the solution

• Argue that this is the best solution

• Refute objections

Essay Outline:

The main goal in this essay is to:

• Interest the reader in the problem
• Convince the reader that the problem is important and needs to be solved
• Explain your solution clearly
• Convince the reader that the solution is cost-effective and feasible
• Convince the reader that your solution is better than other solutions

Introduction: State the problem and explain why it needs to be solved
• If it is an unknown problem, you will need to explain in detail.
• If it is a familiar problem, then you need to paint a vivid picture.
• In both situations, you will need to convince the reader that it is an important problem.

Introduction ideas
• A true-life story about the problem
• A personal experience story
• A scenario: imagined story illustrating problem
• Statistics and facts about the problem which make it vivid for reader
• Explanation of problem with facts and history of problem
• Frame story (story of problem in intro; story of solution in conclusion)
• Vivid description which makes the reader see the problem

Note: Add a thesis statement in the last sentence of your introduction. The thesis statement should have 3 – 4 main points (same main points that will be your sub topics in the Literature Review).

The Body of your Paper
For this essay, the main part of the body will be the Literature Review section.
The body of your paper will be several paragraphs with the respective headings/subtopics and must:
1. Develop each subtopic clearly
2. Give details and incorporate sources
3. Analyze information (different views of writers/sources)
4. The researcher’s “voice” should also be evident; add your views, as well.

The body of your paper will also seek to elaborate the problem.

The Solution section:

1. Will solve the problem
2. Is cost-effective
3. Is feasible to implement
4. Is a reasonable solution to the problem
5. Can stand up to possible objections
6. Is better than other solutions
In order to make a convincing argument, you will need to consider objections to your plan carefully and refute them logically with argument and/or evidence. Add sources here. Use 2 – 3 paragraphs.

Findings
1. Use an opening paragraph for your findings section, giving a general overview of what has been done.
2. Add your graphs/charts here with an explanation (annotation) under each.
3. Five or more graphs can be used in this section.

Conclusion

Your conclusion will be one or more paragraphs. In your conclusion, you want to clinch your argument, give an overview of the problem (as seen in the Literature Review) and convince your reader that your solution is the best. Here are some effective conclusion ideas:

• Tell the reader about the problem and what should happen
• Give a description of how the situation will change if your plan is adopted
• Use the end of the frame story to show how the solution is needed or how it will work
• Give a real-life example or scenario showing adoption of your plan and how it works
• Cite convincing facts, statistics, or expert testimony on the solution or the problem
NOTE: In a conclusion, you summarize main points (subtopics in Literature Review, notions in the Solution section, information from the findings) and restate the thesis statement.
