1. Rose and Crawford argue that intelligence and “good” jobs need to be redefined. Do you agree that blue collar work is often degraded in our society? Do you agree with Crawford that there is value in “working with your hands”? Or does going to college and getting a white-collar job deserve more respect?
2. Argue for the definition of what a “good job” should consist of. You can use your own list of criteria, but you need to write the essay in 3rd person. Does it require a certain level of creativity, autonomy, sociability? Is salary important? What about benefits (insurance, vacations, flex-time . . .) or the work environment? What concessions would you make? For example, would you give up a high salary for more time off? Would you work part-time jobs with no benefits to have the flexibility to travel or spend time with family?
3. Do you agree with Rose that intelligence is more than a person’s education and that many blue-collar jobs require intelligence that is just as rigorous as one gained through intellectual pursuits (going to college, for example)? Or are tests and one’s educational level a good measure of a person’s intelligence?
4. Are the arts and humanities important, like Lynda Barry argues? Or should school focus mostly on academics? Make a case for or against funding the arts in k-12 schools.
5. Do you agree with Kreider that Americans are too focused on being busy, in their work and in their personal lives? Argue for or against the need to be busy.
6. McGonigal argues that video games teach people valuable skills that can be used to solve real world problems. Do you think video games are a worthwhile hobby, or are they just a mindless escape and eat up valuable time that could be used for more productive activities?
