Emotional intelligence (EI) has been found to impact nurses personally and professionally. There are benefits to high emotional intelligence, including improved patient satisfaction and experience, an enhanced patient-nurse relationship, better teamwork and collaboration, and reduced stress and burnout among nurses.
The focus of this activity is to enable you to self-assess your emotional intelligence, identify your strengths and areas for improvement, and explore potential strategies to enhance your emotional intelligence in nursing. Self-awareness of EI and developing strategies to improve EI will support your professional growth and enhance your nursing practice.
By completing this activity, you will gain insights into your emotional intelligence and develop a plan to strengthen your abilities, ultimately improving your nursing practice.
Directions
For the first part of this activity, you will complete an informal emotional intelligence test. You can complete the emotional intelligence test linked in the Supporting Materials section, or you may complete an emotional intelligence test of your choice. Completing an emotional intelligence test will help you evaluate your emotional intelligence. Complete your selected assessment tool honestly and thoughtfully. Make sure to allocate sufficient time for this, as it is crucial for accurate self-evaluation. Once you have completed the assessment, review the results. Consider combining information from this assessment with information from other module resources and your own perception of your EI strengths to complete this activity. Then, write a summary of your emotional intelligence scores. An APA-style template can be found in the RN-BSN Library Guide linked in the Start Here section of the course. Use at least two scholarly, current (within the last five years) references to support your work.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Areas: Describe areas of personal excellence and areas that are growth opportunities.
Biases: Describe how biases may impact emotional intelligence.
Nursing Practice: Reflect on how your nursing practice may be impacted by your emotional intelligence findings.
Strategies: Identify strategies you can implement to enhance your emotional intelligence.
What to Submit
Submit your completed self-assessment. Your submission should be a 1- to 2-page Word document with separate title and reference pages that are not part of the page count. Follow APA style standards for formatting and citing your sources.
