Case Study: Critical Analysis of GIS Literature
• Case Study will include a short paper (~1500-2000 words). When working on any research project it is ESSENTIAL to review recent professional journals for nay quoted sources.
• This assignment involves writing a short paper (1500-2000 words) analyzing three related scholarly, peer-reviewed articles published after 2010. These articles must be related to each other in terms of methodology, sources of data, specific issues, a common topic within GIS, and/or geographical location. Acceptable sources include online full-text articles, chapters from edited book volumes, or printed publications.
• The paper consists of two parts:
• Part 1: Critical Examination (1000-1500 words recommended)
• For this section, choose a specific area of interest within GIS (e.g., urban planning, environmental management, public health, disaster response). The chosen articles should all relate to this topic. Begin by briefly summarizing the chosen area of interest within GIS. Then, for each of the three selected articles, provide a detailed critical analysis addressing the following points:
• Describe the connection between the article and your chosen GIS topic.
• Was a specific hypothesis tested using GIS?
• Was the data used experimental (speculative) or observational?
• Do the research conclusions align with the authors’ data and hypothesis?
• How effectively was GIS applied to address the societal issue(s)?
• What are the strengths and weaknesses of the paper, particularly concerning the validity of methods and conclusions?
• How did the researchers approach the topic, and how do their methods compare to the other selected articles?
• Do the aims or findings of any of the studies conflict with one another?
• How appropriate were the chosen methods for data collection and analysis, given the research question?
• Part 2: Annotated Bibliography (500-750 words recommended)
• Provide a complete APA 7th edition citation for each of the three articles. Following each citation, write a concise (approximately 5-sentence) annotation summarizing the article’s key content, including the research question, methods, major findings, and conclusions.
• What I’m Looking For: This will be graded on the ability to clearly analyze the advantages, disadvantages, and applications of GIS as demonstrated in the selected sources. The analysis should be critical, comprehensive, and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the chosen articles and their relationship to the chosen GIS topic. Pay close attention to the validity of the research methods and the strength of the conclusions drawn by the authors.
