We have covered many topics during this course on health promotion. One of the approaches for effective health promotion in larger groups is to do community-based education. The idea behind community education is not only to provide the knowledge and tools, but also for the public to take responsibility and become empowered to care for themselves as able, and to have the resources to seek help and know how to use it. Community health fairs are specific means to spread the word about promotional healthcare screenings and services within a community, as well as to provide education about health issues. Community empowerment, when people are socially active and take control over their lives and environment, can happen at various levels. This course focuses on individual health empowerment; in NURS 401 you will learn about community empowerment.
For now, you are all invited to walk around the sites (posts) as you saunter through the various presentations both for social media and the health fair to learn all that you can about many different conditions that can be improved by health promotion efforts. If either the social media or health fair product requires access information (e.g. URL video links, etc.) include that content immediately prior to your reference list, in order to allow your peers access to your work. If products (e.g. PowerPoint, crossword puzzle, survey, quiz, etc.) were created attach the content to your post.
With these thoughts in mind, for this week,
- Identify a minimum of two (2) barriers (i.e., problems, issues, frustrations, struggles, technical difficulties) that you personally encountered during the process of working with each of the social media and health fair product options you selected (total of 4 minimum). How did you address each barrier to bring about resolution in order to complete the products?
- Present at least four (4) of your own concerns (professionally/personally) regarding the use of social media (2 concerns) and health fairs (2 concerns) as a means of general public education for health promotion.
- Discuss how you would address the issue of concern for participant privacy during a community health fair.
- Discuss how you would handle negative feedback/comments related to the content of your social media product.
- Now that you have completed your social media and health fair products, would you have done anything differently (for example: in the format type you used or the information you included)?
- How you will change your personal nursing practice in relation to health promotion education through the integration of what you have learned about a) complementary and alternative therapies, b) cultural influences, c) age group influences, and d) the use social media?
- Provide revised one sentence definitions of health, health promotion, and alternative approaches to healthcare from what you stated in Week 1 to reflect what you have learned as you have completed the course content.
Respond to three or more initial posts from your colleagues, addressing such things as:
-
- Suggest an alternative method and/or location to display this information at the health fair and discuss why you feel your suggestion is a better idea.
- How would you entice people to come to the health fair or to approach the booth to obtain more information?
- Can you support what your colleague posted?
- Challenge your colleague to a different view or deeper insight.
