Community College Xenophobia Essay

Answer at least one of the following questions and follow the discussion rubric.

1) Give an example of social control found in the video. How is social control impacting this young boy? Compare your answer(s) with your classmates. That is, do you agree or disagree with your fellow online classmates?

I think an example of Social Control in this clip can be thought of the school/teachers taking control and making decision  to not to allow this little boy to attend school,  because the boy had an unusual appearance, claiming the other children would be afraid of him and this would be out of the norm and draw attention in class. 

An example of a negative sanction was people bullying  this little boy because he was different from others and the teachers not allowing him to attend school because they did’t want attention drawn to him during class. An example of a positive sanction was definitely the doctor coming to this little boys rescue, this Dr. was willing to listen and do what he needed to do to change this little boys life. (yes I googled it and the little boy did have a surgery that changed his life).

Xenophobia include acts of violence, hatred  and these acts are usually intentional to create humiliation and or hatred to the people/persons involved. Example of this was indeed when the teachers would not allow this little boy attend class because of his deformities, stating that the other children would be afraid of him and they didn’t want things or situations to be out of the norm. 

2) Based on the video, give an example of a negative sanction, and then, an example of a positive sanction (this may be more difficult, but try and find a positive in the video). Compare your answers with your classmates. That is, do you agree or disagree with your fellow online classmates?

3) Xenophobia is the fear of “foreigners.” And, this does NOT always mean fear of people outside of your culture or country. Well this concept applies to the video for sure. Discuss any signs of xenophobia you see in the video.
