Code of Conduct for Nurses

Assignment
Overview: Students will share personal perspectives about Principle 4.1 from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Code of Conduct (2023) and establish connections to one’s roles and responsibilities as a student of Centennial College’s Practical Nursing program and future nursing accountabilities. Students will reflect on the beliefs, values and behaviors that form individual and community identities and the basis for respectful relationships by describing actions that represent global citizenship, professional nursing and collaborative practice.

Purposes:
• To use the CNO Code of Conduct Principle 4 as a guide to self-reflect on the accountabilities of oneself as a student of the Practical Nursing Program.
• To create a list of personal expectations with rationale describing conduct that may influence the formation of respectful relationships with peers when participating in course learning activities and assignment completion, based on Principle 4 of the CNO Code of Conduct.
Global Citizenship and Equity Outcomes:
• Identify one’s roles and responsibilities as a global citizen in personal and professional life.
• Identify beliefs, values and behaviors that form individual and community identities and the basis for respectful relationships.
Instructions:
Using the CNO Code of Conduct (2023), as a guide, students will refer to Principle 4. “Nurses work respectfully with the health care team to best meet clients’ needs” (p. 5), with a focus on 4.1 “Nurses self-reflect on how their privileges, biases, values, belief structures, behaviors and positions of power may impact relations with health care team members.” (p. 11) Considering these statements, students will describe three (3) expectations describing behaviors that they will uphold to promote learning effectiveness and the basis for respectful relationships. Students must provide a rationale for inclusion of these statements reflecting on their own personal beliefs, values and expectations with examples of behaviors from self and connections to their future nursing role. This assignment should represent a personalized perspective of why the CNO Code of Conduct matters as a student of Practical Nursing and as a future professional nurse.
Criteria for Assessment:
Using the CNO Code of Conduct, Principle 4 as a guide, students will:
• Describe three (3) behavioral expectations to be upheld by oneself based on the CNO Code of Conduct, Principle 4.1.
• Provide rationale to support described behaviors from self by referring to own privileges, biases, values, belief structures, behaviors or positions of power using personal examples.
• Connect rationale to the expectations of professional conduct as a future nurse.
