1) Can you conceive of other reasons why female gangs have been overlooked? After reviewing the work of Professor Anne Campbell (See the box “Criminological Concerns: The Girls in the Gang”), what kinds of programs do you suppose would help female gang members make a transition to prosocial activities and lifestyles? In what ways must these programs differ from those proposed for male gang members?

1) Three-strikes laws can be harsh. Offenders committing petty thefts as their third strike may in some jurisdictions, for example, receive 25 or more years in prison as courts and prosecutors take their prior record into consideration. Such sentences were upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003. What concerns with three-strikes laws are raised by recent extensions to Hirschi’s notion of social control-life course theories of offending? If the fundamental rationale of three-strikes laws is to protect the community from habitual offenders, are life course theories supportive? If we know what best predicts future offending and if programs can be created to address these casual factors, why rely on long prison sentences?
