PAPER OUTLINE

Unit 2: Case Presentation Assignment

Create a scenario involving a child between 3 – 12 years of age. This section is the introduction or brief overview of the case. The introduction should be about a 1 – 2 paragraphs long and briefly summarize the presenting issues (what brought child in to be seen or why the child received a referral). This section should include a brief explanation of who is being presented, the child’s current situation (chief complaint / primary issue) and the “why now?” (Why the child is seeing you today as opposed to last year, last month, or yesterday), For example:

The case being presented involves a blended intergenerational family with a son in early childhood who is reportedly becoming increasingly distractible, inattentive, impulsive, and restless at school. His parents have received various notes from his teacher about him “blurting out answers without raising his hand”, “walking around the classroom when he is supposed to be sitting”, and “not completing his work on time”. Per the parents, the identified client’s teacher has expressed that his behavior is escalating to the point of distracting his peers and hindering their academic progress. His parents are concerned that he might be delayed developmentally or that he might have a disorder that he inherited from his unknown biological father. They brought him in to be evaluated after meeting with his teacher and her suggesting that his behavior might be a result of their “lifestyle”. This case presentation will explore his developmental stage according to various theoretical perspectives and the impact of genetics and environment on his development.

Case presentations should remain objective and state specific facts. Let the facts speak for themselves and do not interpret them until the summary. “Johnny is acting up at school” is too general. Something like, “Johnny’s teacher reported that he blurts out answers without raising his hand at least five times during a 45 minute lesson” would be better. You can include your subjective professional thoughts during the conclusion paragraph and summary.

Quotes are appropriate in case presentations when quoting expressions from clients. For example: When the interviewer asked Johnny why he thinks his parents brought him to the clinic; Johnny stated, “I just don’t wanna stay sitted down. School is boring. My teacher is a caca head”.

This case presentation should be written in Standard English with complete sentences and paragraphs. Consider the difference between speech and academic writing. For example: “The client that I will be presenting has gotten into lots of fights with other kids”. Gotten into and lots is not good academic English. Consider replacement words like engaged, instigated, or become instead of the word gotten and words like a number of, numerous, or many instead of the word lots. For example: “John has physically fought with other students on several occasions.” Or “The client’s parents report that they have had to meet with teachers and the principal on multiple occasions because of his frequent involvement in physical fights with his peers.”

This paper should be 4-6 pages (not including the cover page and reference page) in APA style format. Your references should include your course text book and at least two other credible sources; a minimum of three references. Your references can also include peer reviewed journal articles found in Kaplan’s library, credible websites, as well as references provided within the project directions and the course materials. Provide appropriate citations and references for any information you use in this paper. Write the paper using guidelines of Standard American English, and consult the Kaplan Writing Center if you have questions about grammar or format. This is not an opinion paper; most academic writing is expected to be written objectively in 3rd person. Remember that all work must be your own and plagiarism is not tolerated. Be sure to review the plagiarism policy in your syllabus. Make sure to use in-text citations throughout your paper. Anything that is not common knowledge or is not an original thought should be cited or it is considered plagiarism. Citations should be rephrased into your own words. There should be minimal to no quoted citations. For example: “development is the result of the relationships among many causal components, interacting in complex ways” can be rephrased to:The multifaceted intermingling of various connecting factors contribute to development (Blewitt & Broderick, 2015). In-text citations should be in APA format (Author, Year).

For example: Johnny lives with his maternal grandfather and his biological mother along his mother’s wife and her daughter.
