While aiding the nurse in discharge teaching for a first time mother, the patient expressed her concern for so many people wanting to come to the house to “meet” the baby and she did not feel comfortable with this because we were at the height of cold and flu season. She did not know how to approach the subject with friends and family members without hurting anyone’s feelings. She wanted to know what she should do as she was afraid that her newborn would become ill. I suggested that she put a post on Facebook and other social media pages that although she appreciated everyone’s excitement about meeting the baby that due to it being cold and flu season and that the parents wanted some quality bonding time with their new daughter that they ask that no one come to the house, etc, etc . This section should focus on the fact that nursing is about patient advocacy and helping your patient work through problems (no matter how big or small) that they may face in or outside the hospital setting

Best Nursing Practice exemplar #2:
While caring for a new postpartum mother who had a c-section, the new mother wanted to actually wash her hair (not just use dry shampoo) to look presentable for a newborn photo shoot with her son. The patient could only shower but could not reach up to wash her hair due to new stitches (from the c-section) and had no idea how she was going to accomplish washing her hair. She did not want the help of her spouse so I had to get creative. I sat her in the restroom on a bedside toilet and had her lean her head back over the shower and washed, dried, and brushed her hair. This section should focus on how nursing is about compassion, treating patients holistically, and making people feel like actual human beings and not just patients. Sometimes nursing is about simple acts of human kindness.
