Question 1
In a brief essay of a minimum of 500 words, address the following questions:
Clearly the labor movement had a clear and compelling mission in those early years to provide workers with basic rights and protections. Many would argue today’s unions have lost that noble purpose, others would dispute that. How do you believe the American labor movement’s early purpose and need has evolved over the years since the Inheritance?
Look at Figure 2.5 in the text by Budd; using this flowchart, which school of thought do you believe is the most appropriate? What is the role of the labor movement under this school? How does this compare to the labor movement as described in The Inheritance? How would you define the meaning of the term “The Inheritance?”
Make sure to consider and refer to the video, The Inheritance, in your essay.
Question 2
Now that you have had a chance to review the history of the labor movement, the legal environment of the labor movement and the structure of the labor organizations, and the entire labor relations process, consider whether unions do matter or whether the purpose of unions has passed in the United States.
Discuss this issue in an essay (minimum 500 words). Make sure to include in your essay the macroeconomic impact of unions, the prevalence of U.S. employment laws, whether HRM has replaced the need for unions and consider the three goals of the labor relations process (efficiency, equity, and voice).
