CONSIDERATION OF AUDIENCE
The audience for your research paper are individuals from the collegiate freshman through the professorial level, who will expect an academic approach to the subject matter, documentation, tone, and argument. Your understanding and use of appropriate rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) will determine how well you satisfy the requirements for this element of the Research Paper.
INTRODUCTION (1 page approximately)
In this introduction, you will first engage the reader’s interest using a rhetorical appeal or “hook,” then you will briefly familiarize the reader with your topic by defining it, as well as any key terms related to your argument. You will then want to preview the information contained in your research paper and how it impacts your topic, being careful to offer only a broad, generalized summary. Remember that, as with all introductions, concrete details and cited evidence are not appropriate for this overview and should be saved for the “Discussion” portion of the paper.
DISCUSSION (2-3 pages approximately)
The “Discussion” portion of your paper will explain, expand upon, and describe the concerns of the thesis through a series of well-developed, logically connected paragraphs. These paragraphs should be guided by topic sentences and include examples relevant to your topic, which with then be supported by summary, paraphrase, and quotations from your research. There should also be logical transitions which connect the previous paragraph to the one following. The “Discussion” portion of your paper should also anticipate the questions and concerns of your audience and offer a through consideration of alternative or opposing viewpoints. These inclusions should be fairly represented and accompanied by your refutation, explaining why these alternatives are not as effective as the position you are offering, or concession to the opposing view.
CONCLUSION (1 page approximately)
The conclusion of your paper serves the same purpose as it has in other papers you’ve written throughout 1010 and should satisfy the following needs: 1) Recap your argument; 2) Restate your thesis in different words; 3) Make any final comments regarding opposing arguments; 4) Present remaining questions or concerns that still require an answer; 5) Offer a final appeal to your audience to act upon your argument and/or advocate on behalf of your proposal; and 6) Offer closure to the argument.
