Assignment #1
After reading Chapter Two (Hammond & Lester), consider areas in education that interest you for further study.
Consider the following:
Self-Reflection and Interests:
• What are your major interests? What topics excite you academically and personally?
• What major personal experiences do you have related to your field? Have you had relevant experiences that might spark an idea?
• What previous courses were most interesting? What topics and concepts resonated with you?
• What theories and concepts are interesting? Are there any that you would like to explore further?
• What do you want to avoid? What topics or areas of research would you prefer to steer clear of?
• What are your career goals? How does your research topic align with your long-term aspirations?
- Exploring the Literature and Current Debates:
• Review recent literature. Look for trends, gaps, and controversies within your field.
• What are the current discussions in your field? Are there any ongoing debates or unresolved questions?
• Identify a research gap. Are there areas lacking data or with contradictory findings?
• What are the latest problems in the field of your topic? What are the pressing issues that researchers are trying to address?
Assignment Details: In your submission, you will detail two (2) potential research topics ideas. Follow the format below and use APA formatting (1 inch margins, double-spacing, no extra space between paragraphs, in-text citations – if used, title page, etc.).
For each topic, include:
Part One: Research Idea – give it a name
Part Two: Explain why the topic appeals to you and its origin. Use anecdotes, literature references and/or explanations about why this is important to you.
Part Three: What concerns do you have about this topic? Use a discussion format rather than a bulleted list. Consider how you might overcome the concerns and discuss your ideas.
Length: Two full pages (one page for each topic)

- Strengths: What strengths do you see in approaching the topic from each perspective?
- Limitations: What limitations do you see in approaching the topic from each perspective?
