Task
You may choose any brick and mortar retail store for this assignment, but you must be able to visit it in person before the assignment deadline. (You may choose a store you have shopped at previously, but you must visit it again for this assignment.)
Assignment requirement: 4 quotes from our textbook about your experience in this retail environment. Your grade will be reduced by 25% for each missing quote. More details on this requirement are below.
- Arrive at the store, enter through the main entrance, and walk around throughout the store. Observe the layout, branding, lighting, sounds, decoration, and fixtures. Look at where the sales register(s) is / are located and how much product is in the store. You may even choose to ask a sales associate about an item or to purchase a product.
- Answer the following questions. Add enough details so that each answer is at least one paragraph long (a paragraph is 5 to 7 sentences).
- What was the name of the store and location? What industry is the store in?
- Analyze the layout of the store by answering these questions: What did you notice about how the layout affected the flow of traffic? Was this good or could it be improved? Use a quote from our textbook and a section number to justify your answer (example: “I observed that the wide open areas meant that customers had plenty of room to walk or chat with friends while shopping. This is a good practice according to our textbook in section 4.”)
- Analyze the fixtures by answering these questions: How did the retail store fixtures influence the shopping experience? List at least five fixtures to analyze. Fixtures can include shelving units, mirrors, seating, customer service counters, tables, racks, benches, mirrors, etc. Was this good or could it be improved? Use a quote from our textbook and a section number to justify your answers.
- Analyze the store atmosphere by answering these questions: How did other retail atmospheric elements affect your shopping experience? What was the “feel” of the store? Was this good or could it be improved? Use a quote from our textbook and a section number to justify your answers.
- What else did you notice, and what other insights did you gain? Was this good or could it be improved? Use a quote from our textbook and a section number to justify your answers.
Optional: You may also sketch out the components of the store if it helps you analyze the retail environment. Upload your sketch with your analysis.
