Analytical Response: Evaluating an interpretation of literature.

Task:
To evaluate an interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Complete the following steps:

Part 1:
Read the interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by Christine Marlowe entitled ‘A most lamentable man’. The text presents a perspective about the factors that are most instrumental in assuring the tragic finale of Romeo and Juliet.

Part 2:
1. Identify the central argument, or thesis, of A most lamentable man.
2. Summarise the three major arguments the writer presents.
a) how plot positions a reader to understand what motivates the tragic conclusion of Romeo and Juliet.
b) how characterisation positions a reader to understand what motivates the tragic conclusion of Romeo and Juliet.

3. For each of the arguments developed by the writer, summarise the supporting evidence. Evaluate how appropriate the interpretation of the evidence is, Support or refute the interpretations using evidence from the play to substantiate your ideas.
4. Provide a final evaluation of the interpretation. Write three paragraphs to evaluate the interpretations of the plot, characters and literary devices developed in A most lamentable man. Explain aspects of the interpretation you agree or disagree with, using evidence to support your argument.
